Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.
Here's a test for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard biological terror, but within Together resides a intense meditation about our choices in loving each other.
A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The narrative commences when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
A Paranormal Spark
While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.
Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.
Both characters face the type of challenges that arise in any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience right now.
Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
